Altered Species (2001) (aka Rodentz)

Director: Miles Feldman

Starring: David Bradley, Leah Rowan

Run Time: 90 mins

Certificate: 15

Plot Outline: Chemicals intended to "hunt and destroy" cancer cells are accidentally leaked from the laboratory into the basement where rats lurk. The chemicals enhance the rats and make them extremely violent and deadly, killing everyone who comes into contact with them.

The Review: I don't really know where to begin with this. Honestly. This review is going to be hard going because the film is so bad. It's wholly uninteresting, features some lousy acting and some awful special effects. We even get CGI rats with longer teeth and which are made to look more aggressive. Hell we even get "rat-vision" in which we see the victims from the perspective of the rats - but Predator this ain't. I can feel the tension and atmosphere overcoming me again just thinking of it! There are some rather pathetically staged rat attacks in which victims lay on the ground and allow themselves to be crawled over by rats. There is even one moment with a ridiculous giant rat which looks like a man in a suit. It's on screen for one kill and is never seen again in the entire film and never mentioned at all - yet one of the cast saw it from the window. Films like this serve little purpose in modern media. They suck badly. They don't scare. They don't even entertain. So why do they get made?

Final Verdict: Altered Species - I am just speechless. For once I am stuck in trying to write a review for a film this bad and pointless. Best get out the traps and poison for this stinker.
