Critters 3 (1991)

Director: Kristine Peterson

Starring: Aimee Brooks, M. John Calvin

Run Time: 86 mins

Certificate: 15

Plot Outline: The flesh-eating fur-balls from space are now housed up in an apartment complex in the city and begin to chew their way through some of the residents.

The Review: This is bad. Critters didn't exactly ignite the film world and this one does even little to be noted. The film looks cheap, has a fairly short run-time and can be pretty boring at times. In my opinion, there's only so much you can do with a plot about little fur-ball criminals on the run. So the film gets packed with secondary plots galore. There are some tedious secondary plots here like the friction in the main family and the evil landlord trying to evict everyone. But are these really necessary? It seems that the script was given the boot too and some of the dialogue is awful. Even the Crites themselves are given the back-foot treatment and you rarely see them as much as you did in the original. They still have some comic value, notably the scene in the kitchen where they are eating beans and farting or when one of them tries to attack a pair of fur slippers, but this isn't enough. They aren't as dangerous as before and hardly anyone gets eaten! Plus this film was the on-screen debut of a certain Leonardo DiCaprio - as if the film itself wasn't bad enough, we get this little peon popping up. To be fair, he's probably the only actor to come out of this with any credit. But that isn't a lot of credit.

Final Verdict: Critters 3 is what it was meant to be - a trashy, straight-to-video bit of junk. There is nothing even remotely interesting about it. Even the Crites have lost their touch.
