They Nest (2000)
Director:
Ellory Elkayem
Starring: Thomas Calabro,
Dean Stockwell
Run Time: 92 mins
Certificate: 15
Plot Outline: A doctor takes a forced vacation after
an incident at his hospital and he goes to a little island for some peace
and quiet. However the island just happens to become infested with a rather
deadly breed of insects. These insects get inside humans and begin to breed
inside them, ending up with a rather nasty chest explosion.
The Review: I thought that this would be just
another bad TV bug horror flick like Bug Buster but it turned out to
be a half-decent effort. Yes it's been done a hundred times before and it
will be done a hundred times after as well. Everything about They Nest
is completely devoid of originality - the isolated setting, the usual chain
of events, stock characters, etc. There's even the whole scenario for our
fallen hero to rise from the ashes and make everything right (he's just had
an awful time at an operating table + he owns a house on the island +
there's a single woman waiting for him = happy ending). But other genre
films have been made badly - this one hasn't. The acting wasn't as bad as
you bad as you'd expect and even though the script wasn't great, it was
delivered as well as you could ask for by the bunch of no-named actors. The
bugs aren't bad either and the special effects don't look as cheap as they
obviously were. My only real problem is that the finale is weak and over far
too quickly. After what had taken place during the rest of the film, I was
expecting something to pack a little more punch to end the film on more of a
high.
Final Verdict: They Nest isn't the greatest
bug film to be released but to say it is a TV movie effort, it's quite good
and not as bad as it should have been.
