Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Business (1998)

Director: Jeff Woolnough

Starring: Matt Battaglia, Roger Perard

Run Time: 95 mins

Certificate: 18

Plot Outline: Luc Deveroux continues his quest to uncover the truth surrounding the Universal Soldier program. But the mysterious 'Mentor' has other things and tries to stop him from revealing too much.

The Review: Not so much a sequel, but a continuation of the previous film, this is still just as bad. The plot is weak and the script is once again a terrible tragedy. Battaglia is slightly better in this than he was in the other one. Burt Reynolds also returns as the corrupt CIA director who orders the soldiers to do all manner of 'evil' things, namely trying to stop Deveroux. Reynolds must have been extremely desperate for a movie role that he stooped so low as to 'star' in this. The thing that keeps annoying me is why the Unisol program keeps on picking 'loose cannons' to be their soldiers. Why not ordinary guys with no history of rebellion or dissention? Haven't they learned from their mistakes? Obviously not. It's marginally better than its predecessor because it has a little more action. I say little more because we actually had an explosion in this one (note sarcasm). There is one more fight scene (in the hospital) which gives the film a lift in the middle but as for the rest of the movie, it's just all non-existent. And to add to the insults, the action scenes are usually shown in slow-motion! This was probably an attempt to make the action scenes longer but I could see over it.

Final Verdict: As with the other movie, the only viable reason to watch is to see another big-named actor kill off his career (although whether Burt Reynolds actually had a career at this point is another question). This is bad stuff.
